Post Install CentOS7 | What we do after Install CentOS7

Introduction

Not only Windows Operating System but also Open Source System need to configure or change some configuration after installed successfully to make more securely and suitable with real work environment. So this guide assist you a few general point that we have to do after installed CentOS 7 (How to Install CentOS 7).

1. Change Host Name

Open Terminal then type command 

[root@ftp ~]# hostnamectl set-hostname centos7.local
[root@ftp ~]# systemctl restart network.service 

2. Change Date Time Format

  • Check current date and time in your system you can type the following command
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl status

      Local time: Wed 2018-04-11 22:10:26 +07
      Universal time: Wed 2018-04-11 15:10:26 UTC
      RTC time: Wed 2018-04-11 15:10:25
      Time zone: Asia/Phnom_Penh (+07, +0700)
      NTP enabled: yes
      NTP synchronized: yes
      RTC in local TZ: no
      DST active: n/a
  • To show all available Timezones you can type the following command
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl list-timezones

Africa/Abidjan
Africa/Accra
Africa/Addis_Ababa
Africa/Algiers
Africa/Asmara
Africa/Bamako
Africa/Bangui
Africa/Banjul
Africa/Bissau
Africa/Blantyre
Africa/Brazzaville
Africa/Bujumbura
Africa/Cairo
Africa/Casablanca
Africa/Ceuta
  • To show timezone suit to you current location just type the following command
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl list-timezones |grep -o "Asia.*"

Asia/Aden
Asia/Almaty
Asia/Amman
Asia/Anadyr
Asia/Aqtau
Asia/Bangkok
Asia/Barnaul
Asia/Beirut
Asia/Bishkek
Asia/Brunei
Asia/Chita
Asia/Choibalsan
Asia/Colombo
Asia/Oral
Asia/Phnom_Penh
Asia/Pontianak
  • To change timezone of local system just type the following command
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl set-timezone "Asia/Phnom_Penh"
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl 
      Local time: Wed 2018-04-11 22:37:37 +07
      Universal time: Wed 2018-04-11 15:37:37 UTC
      RTC time: Wed 2018-04-11 15:37:37
      Time zone: Asia/Phnom_Penh (+07, +0700)
  • Change Time in the system by following the format of time in HH:MM:SS (Hour, Minute, Second) by using the following command
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl set-time 22:50:00
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl 
      Local time: Wed 2018-04-11 22:50:02 +07
      Universal time: Wed 2018-04-11 15:50:02 UTC
      RTC time: Wed 2018-04-11 15:50:03
      Time zone: Asia/Phnom_Penh (+07, +0700)
      NTP enabled: no
      NTP synchronized: no
      RTC in local TZ: no

If it show error like this Failed to set time: Automatic time synchronization is enabled  we have to disable NTP Service by using the following command, Then try to set time again.
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl set-ntp 0

If you want to set time auto follow by timezone start NTP Service again by using command
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl set-ntp 1
  • Change Date in the system by following the format of date YY-MM-DD (Year, Month, Day) by using command set-time
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl set-time 2018-04-11
[root@ftp ~]# timedatectl
      Local time: Wed 2018-04-11 00:00:03 +07
      Universal time: Tue 2018-04-10 17:00:03 UTC
      RTC time: Tue 2018-04-10 17:00:03
      Time zone: Asia/Phnom_Penh (+07, +0700)
      NTP enabled: no
      NTP synchronized: no

3. Configure IP address

4. Assign root privilege to user

  • Create a system user and set password for that user using a command Useradd and passwd
[root@ftp ~]# useradd admin
[root@ftp ~]# passwd admin
Changing password for user admin.
New password: 
  • Change a few line in sudoer config file store in /etc
[root@ftp ~]# nano /etc/sudoers
Then find a line ## Allow root to run any commands anywhere
And add user admin bellow root -> admin    ALL=(ALL)      ALL

Than save and exit file (Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X) 

5. Install Desktop GUI (GNOME)

  • Install some service such as GNOME Desktop, Graphical Administration Tools by using the following command
[root@ftp ~]# yum -y install "GNOME Desktop" "Graphical Administration Tools"
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
 * base: mirrors.bangmodhosting.com
 * epel: mirror.nes.co.id
 * extras: mirrors.bangmodhosting.com
 * updates: mirrors.bangmodhosting.com
  • Start GNOME Desktop environment at startup of system
After install completely we have to type this command to make it working
[root@ftp ~]# startx

Those option that we have to do after completely install CentOS such as hostname, datatime, network, admin privilege and desktop GUI because they are very important and we complete these task by following this guide step by step.
